A show featuring 4 second year painting students. All female and of Pacific background, the four artists bring different offerings to the table ranging from paintings to a performance piece that was especially commissioned for the show by Curator Reina Sutton.
The title of the show is a tongue in cheek reference to how late the
show was put together and right up until starting time for the opening,
it was an apt name for the show.
The paintings, stencils and performance piece all have the underlying theme of family, friends and loved ones within the context of 'What we call home'. Modern day family portraits by Ana Lakusa, family snapshots around the home by Cassandra Kisiona and pain staking cut out family/friend portraits by Meree Tua, we get a wonderful sense of who these young women consider to be important in their lives.
The performance piece was commissioned by Curator Reina Sutton in response to her own studio work. Ana Teofilos' hobbies were something that Sutton wanted to look further into. Along with making a piece
through Teofilo, she also wanted to share with the audience Teofilos' other talents, she wanted to showcase the artist and also show the artist herself that she can make work that was outside of her comfort zone. The piece shows Teofilo in a scene back home in Dunedin. She is sewing, creating new pieces of clothing out of existing ones. Outside the rain falls and harmonises with the singing of her sewing machine. The projector casts Teofilos' shadow against the wall against the falling rain and brings together a beautiful image of this beautiful pacific woman yearning for home and her family.. something that Sutton identifies with strongly, hence the commissioned piece.
