Curator

Reina Sutton

This group of Artists consist of Unitec Painting Graduates of 2011.  Curator Reina Sutton approached them with the opportunity to come back together and put on a show for 'old times sake' and to see what they have been creating outside of the comfort zone of a learning institute.  There was a lot of enthusiasm for this idea from the get go.

They suggested a running theme of 'paper works' and Sutton came up with the suggestion of naming the show 'Return to Sender' which references hand delivered post/letters and also references that the Artists are coming back to their point of origin.

Individual themes and statements were a lovely mixed bag.  For example Thalia Bonds work revolved around the heavy topic of Feminism and her strong stand on it in stark contrast with Lena Schmids whos work centered around fairytale's.  One guest was overheard to say 'I really like the way she makes all these images work together so well.. its perfect'.

Jim Overalls quiet, reflective paintings were a lovely contrast to the drawings and jewellery pieces.  This in itself drew a lot of admirers to his pieces and a lot of wonderful feedback was overheard ie; 'This painting grabs me and draws me into it".

Georgia May Clarks playful drawings captured the theme of spooks, ghouls and witchery.  Fun!  The curator made it her special project to hang these drawings up in a way that would engage the audience and give each drawing the opportunity to be in the limelight.

Alicia Warden aka misscreepcake offerings consisted of her personal work and work that she made as a living.  Suggesting that she put in both gave her the opportunity to gather new customers who saw her work.  Taking her inspiration from the anime genre and mixing it in with cutesy/kitschy iconography, she creates neat little drawings that are very witty, sarcastic and cool.

Ashley Heelams tight drawings are a testament to detail, imagination and clean lines - all neatly packaged in stunning black frames.  His statement was borrowed off his Nephew

"'Uncle Ash, I don't care about art. I like monster trucks.' -Charlie White.
It's simple and sums up my practice. Its also incredibly badass."

Drawings, paintings, jewellery and an installation piece made of origami - what wonderful contributions towards this show.  Thank you for sharing your artistic talents Geo, Thalia, Jim, Ash, Leesh and Lena.

A wonderful group to collaborate with.  Thank you!
